Dutch as a second language / The Dutch Level Ladder / B2 in depth

B2 — Vantage

B2.1 and B2.2 — the same grammar, twice

The B1.1/B1.2 split was about new grammar in each half. B2 is different, and worth knowing before you start it.

Where this comes from. Same convention as B1 — not CEFR vocabulary, a real course-provider split. Grammar and function detail below is quoted from Lest Best's own B2.1 and B2.2 course pages. Full citations at the bottom.
The one fact that changes how you should feel about B2: Lest Best states it directly on both course pages — "Er wordt in deze cursus geen nieuwe grammatica aangeboden. Wel wordt grammatica die eerder is aangeboden, herhaald en verder uitgediept." ("No new grammar is offered in this course. Grammar offered earlier is repeated and deepened further.") B2 is not a new grammar mountain on top of B1 — it's B1's grammar under load: faster, in longer texts, with a bigger vocabulary and no more simplification. That reframes what "stuck at B2" actually means: it is a reading/listening/vocabulary problem far more often than a grammar problem.

B2.1

Halfway through B2

The pivot from B1: talking on record — presentations, structured argument — not just conversation.

In plain terms
  • Give a short presentation, and hold up your end of a two-way discussion
  • Retell an article in your own words
  • Explain something, then argue for it if challenged
Official CEFR wording
English — Council of Europe global scale "Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options." Council of Europe, 2001, Table 1, p. 24
Nederlands — accredited translation, Gesprekken voeren "Ik kan zodanig deelnemen aan een vloeiend en spontaan gesprek, dat normale uitwisseling met moedertaalsprekers redelijk mogelijk is. Ik kan binnen een vertrouwde context actief deelnemen aan een discussie en hierin mijn standpunten uitleggen en ondersteunen." Fasoglio et al. (Eds.), 2015, p. 72

What actually gets taught

No new grammar. Focus shifts to reading, listening, and vocabulary — grammar already taught (through B1.2) is recycled and deepened, not extended.

Functies:

  • presentaties en tweegesprekken houden
  • een artikel navertellen
  • iets uitleggen, beargumenteren, discussiëren
  • het beheersen van alle veel voorkomende taalhandelingen

B2.2

Finishing B2

The full CEFR B2 descriptor, arguing rather than just explaining. The next stop after this one is Staatsexamen NT2 Programma II.

In plain terms
  • Give information and your own opinion, and respond to someone else's
  • Describe past situations and events in more detail than a simple story
  • Give a short argumentative speech and defend a position with more than one argument
